REVAMPED “A” LEVEL SYLLABUS
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Education should not be rigid and unchanging. It should be a constant renewal in anticipation of changes in the economy and the future skills required. Skill sets need to be recalibrated. Unsurprisingly, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced changes in the “A” level syllabus as of 2017. These changes reflect a shift towards new skill sets deemed relevant for the next generation of workers. This article will discuss what those changes mean to school children.
Science practical examinations
A key change to the syllabus will be felt in the sciences curriculum especially in the removal of the SPA-based practical to a different science practical examination. The changes to the science practical will equip students with a higher grade of critical thinking, reasoning and analysis. Students will no longer have the benefit of regurgitating facts but instead need to adapt to new scenarios and think on their feet. It will be a nationwide standardised examination taken near the start of the “A” level examinations.
Content changes
Each subject will have its respective content changes. There will be minor examination format changes as well. The constructive content changes aim to instil new skills in the students to ensure that they remain relevant to the future economy.
